Angela Gonzales, M.Ed. is a Dyslexia Teacher and Reading Specialist at Sam Houston Elementary School in McAllen, Texas. You can contact her at mermaidayg@yahoo.com .
At the beginning of my career, I worked as a bilingual Kindergarten teacher for a total of 8 years. This experience helped me learn how to teach the initial process of reading and writing that has been the focus of my career for the past 27 years.
I went on to train as a Reading Recovery teacher and a Descubriendo La Lectura teacher (Spanish Reading Recovery) and Dyslexia teacher. I worked as a reading recovery teacher for half day and the other half I worked as a Dyslexia teacher. Next, I worked as a MELI teacher for half day (a guided reading program based on reading recovery principles and strategies) and continued Dyslexia teaching as well. Then I became a Reading First Interventionist for half day and continued being a Dyslexia teacher for the other half day.
It was great to teach reading strategies to struggling students that needed my help. I was able to see great success in my student’s reading abilities. My career continued to flourish as I finished my Masters in Reading and became one of many half day Dyslexia teachers working for two schools in McAllen ISD. At one point, serving 3 schools daily because of the growing number of students identified with Dyslexia according to TEA guidelines.
As a Dyslexia teacher, I trained with the CEI reading software program and recently with the New Herman Method Reading Program geared for Dyslexic students in McAllen ISD. I have acquired and learned many powerful reading strategies that have been useful in both identifying students with Dyslexia and in helping them overcome some of the barriers they might struggle with while reading.
My experience in working with teachers, counselors, parents, administrators and supervisors has been great. I have devoted my career to working with some of the most loving, smart and wonderful, but at the same time most challenging, student populations in our schools because it is my passion and calling.
In 2018, I started training to be a CALT (Certified Academic Language Therapist). It is a two year program in which I will become a Dyslexia Therapist to help students learn and recognize spelling patterns important for reading and writing. I will be able to do my own private tutoring in order to help students on a one-to-one basis.
Sincerely,
Angela Y. Gonzalez
